KDE Setup at CISE
Beginning Summer 2004, CISE introduced KDE as a supported desktop environment for all CISE Unix machines.
This page describes the KDE Setup at CISE.
More information on KDE can be found at the KDE Home Page
Features of the KDE Desktop
Here is a screenshot of KDE running at CISE (Click to Enlarge):
KDE at CISE is configured with few changes from the default setup. The one major change is the addition of the "CISE Recommended" menu in the KDE Startup Menu. This is a quick list of programs the Systems Staff feels users may find useful. If anyone feels that other Unix programs should appear in the menu, please use the CISE GNATS System and select the requests category.
Tips for using KDE at CISE
Here is a list of tips to make your KDE Desktop more usable at CISE:
- Control Panel Options
From the KDE Start menu, select
Settings -> Control Center
Once you start the Control Center, you get a list of options to configure. The Systems Staff Recommends you set the following:
- KDE Components -> Session Manager -> On Login : Select Start with an empty session. This prevents a multitude of windows popping up when you log in.
- Certificate Import:
If you plan on using the KDE network programs (Konqueror, KMail) often, you may want to import the CISE site certificate to prevent popups when visiting secure CISE sites.
Simply browse the CISE Certificate Page and click on "Import the CISE Site Certificate". Open the certificate when prompted, and then select "Import". From then on, when visiting secure CISE sites, you will not be prompted to accept any certificates.
