I am a faculty member at University of Florida's Department of CISE.

My research interests are in Massively Parallel Computing, Automated Processing and Understanding of Imagery and Natural Language, Data Compression, and Cryptology. I am also among the faculty affiliated with UF's Digital Arts and Sciences program, with research interests in Psychoacoustics and Computer-Generated Music. I have authored or co-authored over 140 research papers in open conference proceedings and journals, and am currently authoring two books.

I recently chaired a conference (MDIPRICE-9) on the Mathematics of Data/Image Pattern Recognition, Compression, and Encryption IX, with Applications at the 2006 SPIE Technical Symposium, in San Diego, CA. This year, the chairs and program committee shifted focus of the conference to include image segmentation / understanding, pattern recognition, and video understanding, to better support the emerging technology of object-based compression, among other areas of interest. The draft program for this year's conference, can be viewed at this link . Ideas for next year's conference are being solicited, so please feel free to email me if you have topics in the theory of image compression, coding, encryption, or pattern recognition that you think should be addressed.

Personal interests include hiking, surfing, photography, music, and botany (e.g., images this page).
