Biography

Baba Vemuri received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and joined the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he is currently a professor of Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering. He spent a couple of summers at IBM TJ Watson Research Center in '88 and '92 respectively and a year at the German Aerospace Research Inst. in Oberpfaffenhofen '89-'90.

His research interests are in medical image analysis, computational vision, modeling for vision and graphics and applied mathematics. In the past several years, his research work has primarily focused on developing algorithms for analysis of Diffusion Weighted MRI and Diffusion Tensor MRI. Additionally, developing computationally efficient algorithms for 3D image segmentation, uni and multi-modal image registration, 3D shape modeling and recovery from image data. He along with his ex-student Dr. Ravi Malladi and Prof. James Sethian of UC Berekely were the first to introduce level-sets based image segmentation to the field of Computer Vision in '93 (SPIE conf. in Sandiego), a detailed version of this work later appeared in ECCV'94 and PAMI'95. This work has todate received more than 900 citations in journals and conferences spanning the fields of Computer Vision, Medical Imaging, Graphics and others. He has published over 100 refereed journal and conference articles in the field of medical image analysis, computer vision, graphics and applied mathematics.

Dr. Vemuri received the NSF Research Initiation Award (RIA) and the Whitaker Foundation Award in 1988 and '94 respectively. He was a recipient of the best peer reviews at ECCV '94 and a twice receipient of the best poster award at IPMI ('01 and '05). Dr. Vemuri is the program chair for the Intl. Conf. on Computer Vision (ICCV) 2007 in Rio (Brazil). He has has served, on the program committees of numerous IEEE conferences, and as an associate editor of several journals including IEEE Transactions on PAMI ('92-96) and IEEE Trans. on Medical Imaging (1997-2003). He is currently an Associate Editor for, the journal of Medical Image Analysis (MedIA) and the journal of Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU). Dr. Vemuri is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the ACM SIGGRAPH and the SIAM.
